Trail Riding
With Scottish Equestrian Hotel
Trail ride in the magnificent Scottish Border country. This is a
landscape of steep-sided rounded hills, secluded and often quite empty
valleys with wide and rushing rivers, and original native forests.
It is an area
where, for 300 years Scots and English battled, and where landed
families feuded. Cattle rustling across the border and between
neighbours was rife. Hence, the area is straddled by many tracks,
drovers' routes, and dramatic castles and towers, each with wild tales
to tell.
We explore those
ancient hill and forest routes. Maybe for two, or three days, or a full
week. The trail ride starts at Lanark with an inauguration day, meeting
each other, selecting horses to suit. Then we move out to the border
hills.
Each day we ride,
and stay overnight in little country inns, bursting with character and
atmosphere. Your bags are taken on ahead of you, so you can ride light,
with probably just your lunch and extra weather gear in a saddle bag.
Once we reach the
final point of our route, you are collected and return to Lanark for a
final overnight with dinner, and a chance to relax before heading home
the next day.
Ideally, you
should have some riding experience, but there's no need for super
fitness. We operate trail rides that vary in length and content to suit
everyone. Trail riding runs for most of the year, with spring and
autumn probably the favourites, for this is when the hills and rivers
look their best, with vibrant colour.
All our staff hold
the British Equestrian Tourism Certificate, which means they understand
what you want from this type of holiday, and they know how to ensure
you really enjoy it - both on and off the horse. We cannot promise good
weather, this is Scotland, but our climate is what makes our scenery
among the finest in the world.
Routes are varied,
and will be increased in choice as the year goes on.
